Celebrating The Crucial Role Of Embryologists on World IVF Day 2025
To mark this year’s celebration, we take a closer look at what IVF involves and shine a spotlight on the crucial contributions of embryologists at Cape Fertility, who work behind the scenes in our world-class laboratory to help turn dreams into families.
Since the birth of Louise Joy Brown, the world’s first “test-tube baby,” on 25 July 1978, more than 6 million babies have been born through IVF.
This life-changing fertility treatment continues to give hope to countless couples facing infertility, and embryologists remain at the heart of that success.

What is IVF and How Does It Work?
In simple terms, IVF – or in vitro fertilisation – is a treatment in which eggs are retrieved from the female partner or a donor, fertilised with sperm in a laboratory, and then transferred into the uterus of the female partner to hopefully become a pregnancy.
Despite sounding straightforward, IVF is actually a complex, multi-step treatment process that takes place over the course of approximately 28 days. At Cape Fertility, IVF treatment begins with fertility medication, ultrasound monitoring, and egg retrieval from the mom-to-be or a donor.
The most critical stage unfolds in the IVF laboratory, when the eggs are fertilised with the sperm and the resulting embryos are nurtured under the watchful eyes of skilled embryologists, who carefully grow the embryos in our cutting-edge laboratory for five to seven days.
The best-quality embryos are then selected for transfer into the uterus of the mom-to-be.
The Crucial Role Of Embryologists
While much of the IVF process happens inside the body, what takes place in the lab is equally vital to IVF success.
On egg retrieval day, embryologists begin their work by evaluating the collected eggs for quantity, maturity, and quality.
When sperm, either from a partner or donor, is received, it undergoes a preparation process to optimise it for fertilisation.
At Cape Fertility, our laboratory predominantly performs Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) – a procedure in which sperm is injected individually into mature eggs by an embryologist, using high-powered microscopes, specialised needles and micromanipulation skills.
Following fertilisation, the embryos are cultured in specialised environments using a nutrient-rich medium that simulates the conditions of the fallopian tubes. The embryos are regularly monitored, using advanced tools like the EMBRYOSCOPE™—a time-lapse incubator that provides real-time imagery and optimal developmental conditions.
The embryologists continue tracking embryo development and provide updates to patients every second day. Five days post-fertilisation, the best embryo(s) are selected for transfer based on specific criteria. The embryologists load the selected embryo(s) into a transfer catheter, ready for the fertility specialist to perform the transfer procedure.
In addition to embryo development, embryologists also manage the preparation and storage of eggs, sperm, and embryos that need to be frozen for future use.
Meet Our Expert Embryology Team
At Cape Fertility, we are proud of our highly skilled and compassionate embryology team, which includes embryologists Samantha Benghu, Michaela Krishna, Kirsty Abrahams, Angela Rinsma, Kaylin Brunsdon, Samantha Rehrl and Student Embryologist Granny Moloka, led by Lab Director, Gerhard Boshoff, and Assistant Lab Director, Zulaigha Williams.
Working together, our embryologists bring a wealth of experience and adhere to the highest standards of laboratory practice in all aspects of fertility treatment, including ICSI, embryo freezing, genetic testing (PGS/PGD), egg freezing, and frozen embryo transfer. Their teamwork and dedication play a crucial role in our outstanding IVF success rates.
