Fertility Clinic Costs and Treatment Prices

There is no single, one-size-fits-all answer about what the costs and prices at a fertility clinic are, for several reasons explained in this article. However, quality fertility treatment can be affordable, and at Cape Fertility we ensure it is – by valuing each individual patient, delivering individualised and personalised care, and always striving for higher success rates.

Among the most common questions from couples facing infertility challenges are: “What is the cost of treatment at a fertility clinic?” and “What are the prices of fertility treatments?”

For a number of reasons, there is no one-size-fits-all answer or a standard menu with prices from which you choose the fertility treatments you think might work or can afford. These reasons include the highly individualised nature of proper fertility care; the many possible causes of infertility; and the many possible treatments available and the types of medication that may be required – all of which influences the costs, and are discussed in more detail below.

At Cape Fertility, we are committed to making quality fertility treatment affordable. We do this by valuing each individual patient and delivering individualised and personalised care, while always striving for higher success rates. Later in this article we explain how this ensures that we keep the costs at our fertility clinic affordable.

Fertility treatment is highly individualised

Although fertility challenges are often the result of a medical condition, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment package or silver bullet tablets that will ‘cure’ infertility.

Every single patient has a different underlying issue that is preventing pregnancy. In addition, a 25-year-old patient will require very different care than, for example, a 45-year-old patient.

Every patient’s case is unique and the testing and treatment plan recommendations we make at Cape Fertility are based on individual circumstances. Your treatment plan is a unique combination of treatments and medications custom-made for you and your partner by your fertility specialist to give you the very best chance of a successful pregnancy.

Therefore, the costs can vary considerably from patient to patient.

Possible causes of fertility challenges

There is no single cause of infertility or a single treatment or a pill to resolve infertility.

In fact, there is a range of causes of female infertility, as well as a number of causes of male infertility, in addition to the possibility that there may be multiple causes from either or both partners – or no cause that can be found.

Approximately one-third of infertility is attributed to the female partner, one-third attributed to the male partner, and one-third is caused by a combination of problems in both partners, or is unexplained; according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

In addition, there are multiple possible conditions that could result in infertility in the female partner, such as advanced age, endometriosis, ovulation problems, chemotherapy, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), among others. In the male partner, infertility is most commonly linked to sperm disorders, but can also be the result of injury, hormonal problems, lifestyle factors and the treatment of diseases such as cancer.

It is crucial to know the exact cause of your infertility challenge, so that only the best possible treatment and medications can be selected. Pinpointing the exact cause of you and your partner’s fertility challenges is both an art and a science that requires impressive qualifications, extensive experience and advanced techniques.

Range of fertility treatments

The range of advanced treatments available today to address these many causes of infertility is encouraging. It is also another reason why it is not possible to provide a simple answer regarding the cost of treatment at a fertility clinic or be accurate regarding the prices of individual treatments.

The cost of fertility treatment depends on the type and number of treatments done, and the amount of medication required. Not every couple will need the same combination of treatments or medications.

While one can put a price to a procedure, it rarely provides a clear answer. For example, at Cape Fertility, artificial insemination costs approximately R5,000 to R10,000 per cycle and for IVF (in vitro fertilization) approximately R60,000 – R70,000 per cycle.

However, knowing these prices are of little value if you don’t know exactly what treatment – or combination of treatments – you need. In addition, the cost will depend on the type and amount of medication required and whether additional procedures are necessary.

Medical aids and finance options

Undergoing infertility treatment can be a significant financial strain on couples, particularly since medical aid schemes in South Africa in general do not cover assisted reproduction technologies or treatments like IVF, although some may cover procedures such as surgery required.

Fortunately, finance for fertility treatment is available and your fertility specialist will be able to provide you with more information about this option.

Affordable fertility treatment

At Cape Fertility, we ensure your fertility treatments are affordable. We do this by valuing each individual patient, delivering individualised and personalised care, and always striving for higher success rates.

Because we value each patient, we spare no effort bringing into play the expertise and experience of our entire team, along with our advanced equipment and facilities, to establish exactly what your unique infertility challenges are and which specific combination of treatments and medications are required for you. In this way, we ensure the costs at our fertility clinic include only the treatments and medications that will give you the very best chance of a healthy pregnancy.

We will also assist you with advice regarding medical aid cover and finance. Being able to claim back some of the costs, and the ability to pay off finance in more affordable monthly instalments, considerably reduce the financial burden on many of our patients.

Importantly, at Cape Fertility, we also always strive for higher success rates, so our patients have a superior chance of success for every treatment cycle they invest in.

We already have impressive success rates to build on. For example, our success rate with artificial insemination is 15%, but where donor sperm is used, the success rate is 24%.

Our success rate for IVF and ICSI is 45%, although with donor eggs, it goes up to 65%. We are very proud of our average pregnancy rate with three IVF cycles at 79%, among the highest in the world.
