At Cape Fertility, we have a world-class team of five fertility specialists, who have helped thousands of couples to have the families they dreamed of.
We are very proud to introduce this amazing team to you, sharing a bit about their qualifications and backgrounds, and a comment from one of their patients for a personal insight.
Dr Nomathamsanqa (Tamtam) Matebese
With over two decades of experience in the field, Dr Matebese is dedicated to helping couples on their fertility journey.
Married with two children, Dr Matebese is a Director and Fertility Specialist at Cape Fertility. She previously worked in the Reproductive Medicine unit at Groote Schuur Hospital and as a fertility specialist at the Vincent Pallotti Hospital.
Dr Matebese (MBCHB, FCOG [SA], MMed [UCT]) is registered as an Obstetrician; as a Gynaecologist; and as a Sub-Specialist in Reproductive Medicine with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). She has presented papers at both local and international congresses; served as a committee member of the South African Menopause Society and has been a board member of SASREG (Southern African Society for Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy) since 2017.
Her passion and expertise make her a guiding light for couples experiencing infertility.

Dr Lizle Oosthuizen
Dr Lizle Oosthuizen is one of Cape Fertility’s fertility specialists and also part of the fellowship program in Reproductive Medicine at the University of Cape Town. Her dedication to helping a diverse range of patients facing fertility challenges is commendable and her expertise in fertility, endocrinology and recurrent pregnancy loss is undoubtedly a valuable resource those seeking to build their families.
She completed her undergraduate studies and specialist degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town. Dr Oosthuizen worked at a rural Eastern Cape hospital and practised as a general Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Netcare Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
Dr Oosthuizen’s work is a testament to the inclusive and compassionate care provided at Cape Fertility, and it’s reassuring to know that individuals and couples facing fertility challenges have such a dedicated and experienced professional to turn to for support and guidance. She also enjoys photography, music and travel.

Dr. Joanne Pottow
Passion, expertise, and a heart full of empathy – that’s what Dr Joanne Pottow brings to the world of Reproductive Medicine. She’s not just a doctor; she’s a guide on the journey to parenthood.
Dr Pottow obtained her Gynaecology and Obstetrician qualification through the University of the Witwatersrand, Gauteng, South Africa. She completed her specialist training at the University of Cape Town, and received her Master’s qualification through the University of Valencia, Spain. She has also completed the level 2 of the laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgical training, the GESEA program of the European Academy of Gynaecological Surgery.
She also holds a B.Sc. through the University of Port Elizabeth and a PDM from the Wits Business School. She is a member of a number of professional bodies including The Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG), European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SASOG).
A nature lover and a beginner birder, Dr Pottow keeps an active life with her husband, beautiful daughter and extended family.
At the heart of Dr Pottow’s approach is her unwavering belief in patient-centric care. Her patients’ comfort, well-being, and peace of mind are her top priorities.

Dr Paul le Roux
Dr le Roux is not only a highly skilled professional but also a compassionate and understanding doctor who truly cares about his patients. He believes in personalised care and tailoring treatments to each patient’s unique needs.
He is a registered Specialist in Reproductive Medicine with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and CEO at Cape Fertility. After specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Cape Town, he completed a two-year fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology at Groote Schuur Hospital, receiving numerous merit awards for excellence in his clinical work and research, which has been published in leading international journals and presented at international congresses. He also completed the first ovarian tissue transplant resulting in livebirth in Africa.
Married and with two daughters, Dr le Roux is Past-President of SASREG (Southern African Society for Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy) and the Gynaecological Endoscopy Advisor to AAGL in USA.

Dr Sulaiman Heylen
Dr Heylen is the Chairman of Cape Fertility and the President of SASREG (Southern African Society for Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy).
He holds impressive qualifications including a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (Cum Laude), Medical Doctor (Maxima Cum Laude), and Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from K.U.Leuven in Belgium and a Gynaecological Endoscopist Certificate (with distinction) from European Academy of Gynaecological surgery.
Dr Heylen joined Cape Fertility in 1995, and has since introduced the use of TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) and ESA (Epidydimal Sperm Aspiration), was the first to perform laparoscopic tubal re-anastomosis in South Africa, and – with the embryology team of Cape Fertility – achieved the first PGD pregnancy in 2003. Dr Heylen is also the first South African to become an EHSRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) certified Master in Reproductive Endoscopic Surgery.
A specialist in reproductive surgery, Dr Heylen performs very specialised procedures. He is also a part-time consultant at the University of Cape Town and assists in the training of fellows.
Dr Heylen is married and has three lovely children. He is also a black belt (3rd Dan) in Karate and loves cycling.
