World Infertility Awareness Month: Infertility Is a Treatable Medical Condition

This June, as we mark World Infertility Awareness Month, the message we are passionate about sharing at Cape Fertility is clear and hopeful: infertility is a medical condition – and it can be treated, very successfully in most cases, and even quite affordably.

Infertility affects nearly one in six couples worldwide, yet many are still unaware that it is a diagnosable and treatable health condition.

At Cape Fertility this World Infertility Awareness Month, we want to offer reassurance to those struggling to conceive: there is hope. There are safe, effective fertility treatments available – right here in Cape Town.

Infertility is a growing global health concern

The reality is that increasing numbers of couples across the world are facing infertility. If you and your partner are finding it difficult to conceive, you are certainly not alone.

Statistics show that globally, up to 20% of couples will experience fertility problems during their reproductive years. In developing countries, this number rises to 25%.

World Infertility Awareness Month, observed every June, aims to shine a spotlight on the real challenges faced by couples trying to conceive – both male and female – while also highlighting the encouraging truth: most infertility cases can be successfully treated with medical intervention, and often quite affordably.

FACT: Infertility is a medical issue

One of the key goals of World Infertility Awareness Month is to increase awareness. Many people do not realise that infertility is not just a personal struggle, but a recognised medical condition that can – and should – be addressed with professional help.

This lack of awareness often means that couples delay seeking help, unaware that effective and often affordable medical solutions exist.

At Cape Fertility, we are committed to spreading the word that fertility challenges can be treated. With the right diagnosis and care, most couples can achieve their dream of parenthood.

Medical causes – and medical solutions

According to the Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG), a couple is considered infertile if they are unable to fall pregnant after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse – or after just six months if the female partner is over the age of 35.

Crucially, this diagnosis does not mean that conception is impossible. It simply means that medical assistance is needed because, most often, infertility is the result of an underlying medical condition.

Causes of infertility in men and women

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised infertility as a major public health issue worldwide. There are many contributing factors – including delaying childbearing, lifestyle-related conditions, and the effects of treatments for illnesses such as cancer.

Infertility can affect both partners. In women, common medical causes include advanced maternal age, endometriosis, ovulation disorders, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), or the impact of treatments such as chemotherapy or surgery. In men, infertility is most often linked to sperm issues – such as low sperm count, sperm motility problems, or blockages – or to previous injury or illness.

That’s why it’s so important for both partners to undergo a full evaluation to identify the exact causes and determine the best course of treatment.

Safe, effective treatments available at Cape Fertility

The good news is that thanks to remarkable advances in medical science, there are a wide range of treatments available to address fertility issues. These include options like ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and more.

However, not all fertility challenges required advanced medical procedures, and in many cases, treatment could be as simple and affordable as hormone treatment or artificial insemination. In fact, only a small percentage of fertility patients require the most advanced and more expensive treatments such as IVF.

At Cape Fertility, our expert team provides world-class fertility care using the latest technologies, tailored to each couple’s unique situation. We are proud to offer some of the highest success rates globally, and a compassionate, supportive environment where every patient is treated with respect and care.
